Escaping the Slog: My Journey from T1D Burnout to Empowerment

Living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a relentless, never-ending task. The daily grind of blood sugar checks, insulin doses, and constant vigilance eventually wore me down after 45 years leading to burnout and depression. The weight of T1D management became overwhelming, leaving me feeling trapped in an exhausting cycle I call the slog.

Just when it seemed there was no escape I discovered LOOP, an automated insulin delivery system that changed everything. LOOP offered a way out of the slog, providing a level of control and ease I hadn’t experienced before. It was like a breath of fresh air.

LOOP integrates my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump and uses an algorithm to adjust my insulin delivery automatically as needed. This automation relieved me of the constant mental calculations and worry about my blood glucose levels. For the first time since I was diagnosed in 1973, I feel I am in control of my life. All of it including Type-1 Diabetes I became present again. Fully engaged with those I am with rather than having a dozen worries occupy my headspace.

As LOOP began to take over the management of my diabetes, I noticed a shift in my mental state. The burnout began to fade, replaced by a sense of empowerment and hope. With better blood sugar control and fewer fluctuations, I could focus on living my life instead of constantly battling my condition.

Escaping the slog of T1D is a transformative journey, and LOOP is the catalyst that made it possible. Today, I feel more in control, less burdened, and more optimistic about the future.
